Il contributo presenta i risultati finora ottenuti dalla ricerca filologica sui Dialogi di Gregorio Magno (590-604) e le aspettative che tale ricerca ha suscitato negli ultimi decenni. Infatti, in anni recenti, sono stati pubblicati alcuni importanti contributi sulla tradizione manoscritta dei Dialogi di Gregorio Magno (590-604), frutto della gran mole di studi stimolati dall’intervento di Francis Clark che, agli inizi degli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso, ha revocato in dubbio la paternità gregoriana dell’opera. Tra i contributi maggiori sul versante ecdotico sono ricordati quelli di Mario Iadanza, Paolo Chiesa, sulla tradizione indiretta del testo, e, soprattutto, Lucia Castaldi. Un altro contributo notevole ricordato dall’autore è stato quello offerto alla ricerca filologica sui Dialogi dalla Società italiana per lo studio del medioevo latino (SISMEL) attraverso la banca dati elettronica Mirabile. Oltre a un’ampia descrizione dello status degli studi sul versante ecdotico, l’articolo offre anche una sintetica disamina della ricerca storica sull’opera di Gregorio. In merito all’indagine propriamente storica è stato scritto che essa «per ampiezza e varietà rappresenta indubbiamente uno dei capitoli più importanti della “storia della storiografia” del Medioevo e della stessa storia della medievistica» (A. Degl’Innocenti).

The article presents the results obtained so far from scholarly research on the Dialogues of Gregory the Great (590-604) and the expectations that such research has attracted in recent decades. In recent years, important contributions have been published on the manuscript tradition of the Dialogues of Gregory the Great (590-604), the result of a large number of studies stimulated by the intervention of Francis Clark who, in the Eighties of the last century, denied the authorship of the work. Among the major contributions on the textual criticism side are mentioned those of Mario Iadanza, of Paul Chiesa, on the indirect tradition of the text, and, particularly, of Lucia Castaldi. Another major contribution on the philological research of the Dialogues is that of the Italian Society for the Study of Medieval Latin (SISMEL) through the electronic database Mirabile. In addition to a comprehensive description of the status of the studies on the textual criticism side, the article offers a brief examination of the historical research on the work of Gregory. In the strictly historical survey on the Dialogues, in fact, it was written that «in breadth and variety it is undoubtedly one of the most important chapters in the history of historiography of the Middle Ages and in the history of medieval studies» (A. Degl’Innocenti).
