La contestualizzazione del pensiero e dell’opera di Charles Péguy richiede di tornare sulle figure di Émile Zola e di Henri-Louis Bergson, dovutamente identificati nel momento storico della Francia tra il XIX e il XX secolo. Di non minore interesse è la comprensione della rivoluzione estetica che gli «impressionisti» compirono con la loro produzione artistica. Con tali riferimenti culturali insieme alla considerazione delle vicende della società e della Chiesa nella Francia, l’interprete attuale si trova nella condizione migliore per apprezzare il contributo caratteristico di Charles Péguy in particolare per la sua comprensione della vita, della storia e del cristianesimo.

In order to place the thought and works of Charles Péguy in their right context it is necessary to turn to the figures of Emile Zola and Henri-Louis Bergson, situated in the historical period which goes from the end of the nineteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. Comprehension of the revolution in aesthetics which the Impressionists accomplished with their art is of no lesser importance. This cultural background together with the events which took place in France and the Church in France place whoever wishes to interpret Péguy today in better position for the appreciation of Péguy’s particular contribution as regards his understanding of life and the history of Christianity.
