Es relativamente reciente el interés social por el niño y la niñez. Aunque las causas pueden ser múltiples, la principal es el profundo cambio cultural en la comprensión y en la valoración de esta etapa singular en la vida del hombre. La teología cristiana no puede quedar ajena a este proceso, que toca elementos esenciales de la vida del creyente; tiene, pues, que retomar el tema del niño e iluminarlo desde el evangelio. Antes, y para mejor apreciar la novedosa aportación del Jesús evangélico, habrá que recordar la postura que el mundo a él contemporáneo mantenía frente al niño.

Social interest in the child and childhood is growing nowadays. There are certainly many reasons, the main one is the profound cultural change in the understanding and assessment of this unique period in men’s life. Christian theology can not remain away nor unaware to this process; it really touches the very heart of the Christian experience. It should return to the child-issue and clarify it from the gospel. To better appreciate the newness of the contribution of the evangelical Jesus, one must take into account perceptions and sensitivities that on child and childhood had the Greco-roman world.
