Lo studio definisce le connotazioni culturali che caratterizzano il profilo e la condizione della donna greca nel mondo antico. L’analisi, che procede lungo coordinate storiche, antropologiche e letterarie, individua programmaticamente un contesto ben delimitato nello spazio e nel tempo, ma assolutamente centrale ed emblematico: l’Atene del V secolo a.C. Il lavoro è articolato per categorie concettuali, etiche e psicologiche, con un allargamento progressivo del campo storico e istituzionale alle pratiche quotidiane, ai comportamenti abituali, alle convenzioni culturali che segnalano l’esclusione della donna dalla comunità sociale e la sua relegazione all’interno dello spazio domestico. Uno sguardo attento è stato riservato alle testimonianze deducibili dalla letteratura d’età classica, con una circostanziata riflessione sul teatro tragico, di cui sono state selezionate le figure più significative, le espressioni più probanti e sintomatiche della misoginia greca, ma anche le interpretazioni ideologicamente proiettate verso una più moderna sensibilità.

This paper defines the cultural background and the condition of women in Ancient Greece. It proceeds to examine the history, the anthropology and the literature of an important and significant period of history, that is Athens in the 5th century BC. The paper first takes into consideration the categories of thought, ethics and psychology. It then turns its attention to the historical, institutional aspects of daily life, habitual behaviour and cultural conventions which denote the exclusion of women from the social community and their relegation into the dimension of domestic life. It pays great attention to examples taken from the literature of Ancient Greece, some significant figures, particularly in Greek tragedy, and then not only to expressions which are a typical proof of Greek misogyny but also those interpretations which are an ideological projection of more modern thought.
