Nella nuova versione preparata per le assemblee liturgiche, la pericope dell’annunciazione a Giuseppe ritorna riproponendo il dubbio dello sposo di Maria circa la fedeltà della propria promessa. Questa interpretazione, benché segnata da una lunga e lontana tradizione, sembra meno rispettosa tanto nei riguardi di Giuseppe, quanto nei riguardi della Vergine, di quella che un’altra tradizione parallela, anch’essa altrettanto antica e autorevole, ci ha tramandato. Il “timore” di Giuseppe non gli deriva dal suo dubbio nei confronti della sposa, ma dalla sua consapevolezza di trovarsi di fronte alla maestà di Dio, per cui decide di ritirarsi da “uomo giusto”, per non invaderne il mistero, prima di essere chiamato a farne parte. È in vista di assegnare il nome al Figlio di Dio che Giuseppe riceve la missione di essere l’ombra proiettata del Padre.

In the new version which has been prepared for the liturgical assembly, the biblical pericope of the annunciation to Joseph once again proposes his doubts about the fidelity of his betrothed. This interpretation, although it bears the mark of a lengthy and remote tradition, appears to be less respectful towards Joseph and to the Virgin than another parallel tradition which is equally ancient and authoritative. Joseph’s fear does not originate from any doubt about his bride to be but from his perception that he is in the presence of the majesty of God. So for this reason, “the righteous man” decides to draw back so that he may not encroach upon the mystery before he is called to be part of it. It is in view of giving a name to the Son of God that Joseph receives the mission of being the shadow cast by the Father.
