Haber invocado a Dios como “Señor, amigo de la vida”, por vez primera y única en toda la Biblia, es un notable acierto del autor del libro de la Sabiduría. De innegable actualidad, la inusual fórmula, con todo, no es ni demasiado conocida ni ha sido suficientemente estudiada. Quizá se dé por descontada y obvia su acepción. Lo que no es el caso: Sab 11, 26 la utiliza con un sentido que no el usual en el griego contemporáneo, más bien, todo lo contrario; y el contexto más amplio (Sab 11,15-12,2), que explica cómo y para qué Dios corrigió a Egipto con las plagas, apunta hacia una comprensión del comportamiento de Dios no tan evidente: Dios ama creando, conservando y corrigiendo; educa a los suyos porque los ama y los quiere – por más alejados que de Él estén – para sí. Dios ama lo que le pertenece; porque no quiere perderlo, apuesta por el pecador y le tiene paciencia, para que pueda convertirse y regresar a Él. Dios ama, incluso cuando castiga.

“Master, who loves life” is a rare, unequaled, formula, accredited to God by the author of the Book of Wisdom. This is the first, and the last, occasion the formula is used in the whole Bible. Fairly meaningful nowdays, this unusual expression is, nevertheless, not quite well-known nor, apparently, has deserved to be much researched. One could suppose its meaning is clear enough; that is not really the case. Sag 11,26 uses it in a very unusual connotation, unheard of in the contemporary greek language. And the extended context (Sag 11,15-12,2), while explaining how and what for God chastised Egipt with the plagues, points at a perception – neither so evident – of God’s behaviour: He loves by creating, by sustaining, by testing his creatures; He instructs his people, out of love, and wants them for Him, even if they remain alienated.
