San Francesco di Sales non è identificato e neppure considerato come pedagogo. Il suo nome non compare quasi mai nella storia della pedagogia e non è citato dalle opere classiche in materia. La sua concezione dell’educazione è generalmente trascurata dagli stessi autori cattolici. È vero che Francesco di Sales non ha scritto alcun trattato che la esponga in maniera sistematica; soltanto occasionalmente vi accenna o la suggerisce. Tuttavia, lo fa con tale frequenza, originalità e vigore da spingerci a tentare la scommessa di presentare il vescovo di Ginevra come educatore e pedagogo: educatore, avendo praticato l’educazione non in maniera casuale ma regolare; pedagogo, avendola fatto oggetto di una riflessione sufficientemente coerente da giustificare e meritare di essere ricostruita e tematizzata.

Saint Francis de Sales is not identified as or even thought of as a pedagogue. His name almost never appears in the history of pedagogy nor is it mentioned in the classic works on this subject. It is true that Francis de Sales never wrote a treatise or systematically expounded on the subject; as the occasion presented itself, he merely made reference to or suggested the topic. However, he does this with such frequency, originality and vigor that we are tempted to present the bishop of Geneva as an educator and a pedagogue: an educator, having taught regularly; a pedagogue, having made pedagogy the object of a reflection which is sufficiently coherent to deserve to be reordered and placed at its center.
