L’articolo esamina l’uso che san Francesco di Sales fa del Cantico dei Cantici, specialmente nel Trattato dell’amor di Dio. Dapprima considera la ricerca esegetica contemporanea sul Cantico, la quale interpreta il testo come una celebrazione dell’espressione fisica dell’amore umano. Poi considera alcune recenti pubblicazioni che dimostrano un rinnovato apprezzamento per l’“interpretazione tradizionale” del Cantico come espressione dell’amore divino-umano. L’articolo passa a descrivere il posto del Cantico nel pensiero e negli scritti del Sales. Nell’Indice della raccolta delle sue opere si elencano più di settecento citazioni del Cantico. Inoltre i tre versetti della Bibbia che Francesco cita più frequentemente appartengono proprio al Cantico (1,3; 8,6; 1,1). L’articolo conclude discutendo la connessione tra la familiarità di Francesco con il testo del Cantico ed il suo notevole successo come direttore spirituale di donne del suo tempo.  

The article examines St. Francis de Sales’ use of the Song of Songs, especially in his Treatise on the Love of God. It reviews contemporary research on the Song, which understands the text as a celebration of the physical expression of human love. It then looks at some recent publications that demonstrate a renewed appreciation for the “traditional interpretation” of the Song as expressive of divine-human love. The article then describes the place of the Song in the thought and writings of Francis. More than seven hundred citations of the Song are listed in the “Index” to his collected words. Further, the three verses of the Bible that Francis most often quotes also come from the Song (1:3; 8:6; 1:1). The article concludes with a discussion of the connection between Francis’ immersion in the text of the Song and his remarkable success as a spiritual guide for the women of his time.
