Ad Atene tra la fine del V e l’inizio del IV sec. a. C. viene ucciso Eratostene, un noto dongiovanni. Questi adocchia e seduce una giovane sposa, moglie di Eufileto, un modesto contadino, che trascorreva molto tempo in campagna, lontano dalla moglie. Eufileto, dopo la nascita di un figlio, pone piena fiducia nella moglie. Informato della tresca, sorprende in flagrante adulterio e, davanti a testimoni, uccide Eratostene. I parenti della vittima intentano un processo contro l’omicida, che davanti ai giudici pronuncia una splendida orazione, scritta da Lisia, uno dei più grandi oratori ateniesi. Nello studio, accanto agli aspetti culturali, giuridici ed economici del tempo in cui si verificarono i fatti, si pone particolare attenzione su eventi tramandati e presenti ancora in molte zone dell’Italia meridionale:

In Athens in the late fifth and early fourth century B. C. Eratosthenes, a well-known real don Juan was killed. The victim’s relatives hold a trial against the murderer, who before the Court gives a brilliant oration, written by Lysia one of the greatest orators of Athens. In addition to the study of the cultural, legal and economic aspects of the time, in which the facts occurred, a particular attention is focused on events passed down and still present in many areas of southern Italy.
