L’articolo si inserisce nell’attuale riflessione della Chiesa in preparazione al Sinodo dei Giovani e cerca di offrire uno sguardo sui primi secoli del Cristianesimo. A tale scopo vengono esaminate alcune opere dei tre Padri latini prescelti (sant’Ambrogio, san Girolamo e sant’Agostino) attraverso le quali il lettore potrà approfondire il tema dell’accompagnamento dei giovani. Dopo alcune premesse introduttive, l’autore presenta più in dettaglio le opere patristiche. Sant’Ambrogio ci offre alcuni esempi della predicazione ai neobattezzati e alle vergini consacrate. San Girolamo, nelle sue due lettere prese in esame, elabora l’argomento dell’accompagnamento educativo per due bambine destinate a diventare vergini consacrate. Alla fine vengono presentate tre opere di sant’Agostino dove sono presentate riflessioni teoriche sull’accompagnamento all’interno della comunità cristiana.

The article intends to enrich the current reflection of the Church in the preparation for the Synod on Youth, and tries to offer a glimpse of Early Christianity. In fulfilling such purpose, works of three distinguished Latin Church Fathers are to be examined, who are St. Ambrose, St. Jerome, and St. Augustine; through these carefully chosen works, our readers may delve into the theme of “walking with young people”. After the opening preliminary remarks, the author presents each of the selected works in greater details: St. Ambrose offers us examples which are found in his homily to the newly baptised, and to the consecrated virgins; St. Jerome, in his two letters those are to be scrutinized, elaborates the idea of an “educative companionship” for two young girls who are meant to be consecrated virgins; finally three of the St. Augustine’s works will be presented, in which theoretical reflections on spiritual guidance within the Christian community are expressed.
