Don Bosco è stato un appassionato cultore delle lingue classiche, particolarmente del latino. Eccellente studente, dopo l’ordinazione sacerdotale, ha continuato a far uso del latino nella sua corrispondenza. Per ragioni squisitamente educative, ha promosso lo studio delle materie umanistiche dando vita, anche grazie ad iniziative geniali, ad una vera e propria “scuola” di studiosi e di insegnanti di tali discipline. È questa un’eredità culturale e pedagogica da custodire ed incrementare perché l’umanesimo cristiano sia una risposta alle sfide del tempo presente.

Don Bosco was passionately devoted to the classical languages, particularly Latin. He was an excellent student and after his ordination as a priest he continued to use Latin in his correspondence. For educational reasons he encouraged the study of humanities and on account of his remarkable initiatives, he founded an authentic “school” of scholars and teachers of these subjects. This is the cultural and pedagogical heritage which must be kept and increased so that Christian humanism may be the answer to the challenges of the present age.
