Dal XV secolo, i circoli umanistici nella Dalmazia riuscirono a sviluppare l’erudizione in riferimento all’eredità dell’antichità classica. In quell’ambiente è nato, nel XIX secolo, un nuovo slancio delle ricerche umanistiche. Vitale è proprio l’interrelazione tra quelle aree dove si incontrano l’Europa e il Mediterraneo. L’Europa si è ritrovata nell’Unione Europea, che fortunatamente include sia le città mediterranee che quelle continentali. La Città eterna offre un’occasione straordinaria di capire come, non solo le rive mediterranee, ma anche le terre nordiche, hanno generato tanti e illustri personaggi che furono protagonisti della civiltà mediterranea. Infatti, il Mediterraneo non possiede un centro. Ritrovare la centralità del Mediterraneo non trascurando la sua parte slava e le sue rive del Mar Nero è una condizione per un futuro più sereno e appropriato alla natura stessa del Mediterraneo dei nostri giorni, dal momento che non si tratta solo di un rapporto Nord-Sud, ma anche di un rapporto Ovest-Est.

From the 15th century onwards the associations of Humanists in Dalmatia managed to develop their knowledge of the heritage of the classical age. The 19th century saw a fresh impetus in research of the subject of humanities in these same circles. The relationship between these areas where Europe and the Mediterranean meet is truly fundamental. Europe is now in the European Union which fortunately includes both the Mediterranean and the continental cities. Rome offers an extraordinary opportunity for understanding how not only the shores of the Mediterranean but also the lands of the North have generated so many illustrious persons who were protagonists of the Mediterranean civilization. For the Mediterranean does not possess a centre. Since it is not a question of the relationship between North and South but that of East and West, the condition for a more serene and appropriate future for the nature of the Mediterranean in our time, is to recover its central position while not neglecting its Slav components and the shores of the Black Sea.
