In questa conferenza fatta in occasione dell’uscita del suo libro intitolato Chiesa cattolica. Essenza – Realtà – Missione, BTC 157 (Brescia, Queriniana 2012), l’Autore si avvale non solo di più di 70 anni di impegno accademico, ma anche di esperienze personali con la “sua” Chiesa, segnate dalla seconda guerra mondiale, dal Concilio Vaticano II e dall’esercizio di alte responsabilità nella Chiesa. Egli presenta il metodo e le sfide attuali dell’ecclesiologia: da una parte, l’ecclesiologia deve essere radicata nella Parola di Dio e nella Tradizione della Chiesa, pur rimanendo sempre attenta ai segni dei tempi; dall’altra, oggi più che mai, essa deve stimolare la Chiesa a essere semper purificanda et renovanda, a diventare una minoranza qualitativa, sveglia e creativa, che invita gli uomini a credere in Dio. La priorità dell’ecclesiologia sembra quindi essere quella di porre la questione della Chiesa nella luce della questione di Dio e di fare riscoprire la Chiesa come segno e strumento del Regno di Dio. Il successo di questo compito dipenderà dalla capacità della Chiesa a essere comunione e a dialogare sia all’interno che all’esterno, per annunciare con gioia il Vangelo di Dio.

In this conference convened on the occasion of the release of his book titled Chiesa cattolica. Essenza – Realtà – Missione, BTC 157 (Brescia, Queriniana 2012), the author not only makes use of the 70 odd years of academic commitment but also of personal experiences with ‘his’ Church marked by the Second World War, by the Second Vatican Council and by his exercise of high responsibilities in the Church. He presents the method and the present-day challenges of Ecclesiology: on the one hand, Ecclesiology, while remaining ever attentive to the signs of the times, has to be rooted in the Word of God and in the Tradition of the Church; on the other hand, it should, today more than ever, stimulate the Church to be semper purificanda et renovanda, to become a qualitative, awakening and creative minority, that invites people to believe in God. Therefore, the priority of Ecclesiology seems to be one that poses the question of the Church in the light of the question of God and to help it discover the Church as a sign and instrument of the Kingdom of God. The success of this task will depend on the ability of the Church to be communion and to dialogue both within and outside the Church, in view of joyfully proclaiming the Gospel.
