Avvicinare i classici da studiosi, significa penetrare la loro identità, per trasferirla nella propria vita, come presenza in grado di guidare pensieri, sentimenti, azioni. Questo è il compito più difficile anche per ogni docente di lingue classiche perché, solo accettando umilmente questa sfida, può trasmettere ai propri studenti non solo amore per l’antichità, ma, soprattutto, gli stimoli interpretativi che li aiutino a trovare motivi di identificazione con gli autori greci e romani. Perciò, li interroghiamo, sicuri che dal loro silenzio verranno risposte sorprendenti, in grado di illuminare la nostra vita. Il mare regala molti piaceri, ma nessuno è superiore al bisogno di timore e desiderio da cui siamo attratti, quando sentiamo il suo infinito, quella dimensione di pace che ci accoglie nel vento e ha la voce delle onde.

The approach of scholars to classical texts implies penetrating their identity in order to transfer it into their own lives as a presence which is able to guide their thoughts, sentiments and actions. This is the most exacting task for any teacher of the classical languages because only by the humble acceptance of this challenge may he communicate to his students not only a love of ancient world but also stimulate an interpretation which helps them to establish a link with the Greek and Roman authors. That is why we ask questions of them because we are sure that astonishing replies, which are capable of lighting up our lives, will ensue from their silence. The sea offers many gifts but none superior to the need for reverence and desire by which we are attracted when we hear the infinite, that dimension of peace which greets us in the wind and whose voice is in the waves.
