Nel suo primo viaggio a Roma, fatto nel 1858, don Bosco visitò anche due catacombe: quella di San Pancrazio sull’Aurelia e San Sebastiano sull’Appia Antica. Della prima ci ha lasciato dettagliata memoria nella sua “cronachetta” il chierico Rua, che accompagnava il Santo. Per quanto riguarda San Sebastiano, invece, si tratta di una “ricostruzione” del biografo don Lemoyne in base a testimonianze tardive. Non essendo ancora note al pubblico le scoperte dell’archeologo Giovanni Battista de Rossi alle catacombe di San Callisto e soprattutto tenendo presente la cultura di quel tempo, vengono fatte alcune considerazioni non conformi ai canoni dell’archeologia cristiana. L’autore in questo saggio oltre a ricordare l’intensa commozione spirituale dell’illustre pellegrino, precisa meglio affermazioni e avvenimenti riguardanti la visita di don Bosco alla Roma sotterranea cristiana e rettifica alcuni luoghi comuni allora in voga sulle catacombe.

In his first journey to Rome in 1858, don Bosco also visited two catacombs: that of Saint Pancrazio on the Aurelia and Saint Sebastiano on the Appia Antica. Don Rua, who accompanied the Saint, left us a detailed account of the former in his little “chronicle”. However, as regards the visit to Saint Sebastiano, this is a “reconstruction” which is based on later testimonies, of his biographer don Lemoyne. Since the archeological discoveries of the archeologist Giovanni Battista de Rossi in the catacombs of Saint Callisto were still unknown to the general public and, above all, while keeping well in mind the culture of those times, some considerations are made which are not in conformity with the canon of christian archeology. In this article the author, besides recalling the intense spiritual emotions of this illustrious pilgrim, provides a more accurate version of the assertions and events concerning the visit of don Bosco to subterranean christian Rome and rectifies some common sayings which were then in fashion about the catacombs.
