In occasione della ricorrenza dei vent’anni dalla data della sua fondazione, l’Autore ricostruisce le vicende attraverso le quali è nata all’Università Salesiana la Facoltà di Scienze della Comunicazione sociale, la prima nell’area delle Università Pontificie romane, tre anni prima che nascessero analoghe Facoltà nelle Università italiane. Dall’analisi dei documenti e dalla ricostruzione del contesto in cui sono state prese le decisioni, appare evidente che i promotori più decisi, tanto da ritornare con insistenza sulla loro richiesta, sono stati i Capitoli Generali dei Salesiani (21° e 22°) e, quindi, i Superiori Maggiori, in particolare don Egidio Viganò, prima Consigliere per la Formazione (1971-1977) e poi Rettor Maggiore e Gran Cancelliere dell’Università per quasi vent’anni (1977-1995). La Facoltà è stata voluta come atto di omaggio e di fedeltà  al carisma di san Giovanni Bosco nel centenario della sua morte. Interessante è la scoperta che questa istituzione è stata presentata all’approvazione della Santa Sede con l’appellativo di “Scuola di Comunicazione Don Bosco”.

On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of its foundation, the Author brings together the events that led to the birth of the Faculty of the Sciences of Social Communication at the Salesian University – the first among Roman Pontifical Universities in this area, three years before similar Faculties were set up in Italian Universities. From the analysis of documents and the reconstruction of the context in which decisions were made, it appears evident that the most decisive and insistent supporters of the project were the Salesian General Chapters (21st and 22nd) and, particularly, Fr. Egidio Viganò who was first, the Councillor for Formation (1971-1977), and later, the Rector Major and Grand Chancellor of the University for nearly twenty years (1977-1995). The Faculty was set up as an act of homage and fidelity to the charism of St. John Bosco in the centenary year of his death. Interestingly, it was discovered that this institution was presented to the Holy See for approval with the title, “Don Bosco School of Communication.”
