Da sempre discusso, oggi il celibato nella Chiesa, sia ministeriale che consacrato, è sotto attacco; fatti clamorosi (scarsità di vocazioni nella Chiesa, ricorrenti casi di infedeltà, non di raro pure criminose) lo hanno messo in questione. Sembra urgente ripensare di nuovo il suo fondamento evangelico: cosa ne ha pensato Gesù, come lo ha vissuto e perché? Poiché non tutte, ma molte delle difficoltà sorte nel vivere il celibato per il regno provengono da una inadeguata comprensione della sua natura (dono di Dio ad alcuni), della sua valenza profetica (annuncio del Dio che sta per venire) e della sua intima relazione con la vita di famiglia (le cui difficoltà mai giustificherebbero rinunciarne). Oggi, come sempre, il discepolo celibe di Cristo vive coscientemente aggraziato e affettivamente solo.

Celibacy in the Church (both ministerial and consecrated) which has always been controversial is today under attack; noteworthy situations (the shortage of vocations in the Church, recurring cases of infidelity, even sometimes criminal) have put it under the spotlight. It seems to be necessary to give fresh thought to its evangelical foundation: what did Jesus think about it, how did he live it and why? Since not all but many of the difficulties that arise in living celibacy for the kingdom come from an inadequate understanding of its nature (a gift of God to some), of its prophetic value (proclaiming that God is coming) and of its intimate relationship with family life (the difficulties of which would never justify giving it up). Today, as always the celibate disciple of Christ consciously lives a gifted existence and as one who is affectively alone.
