L’articolo si apre con una serie di chiarimenti sulla terminologia e le caratteristiche della pietà popolare, per realizzare successivamente una esposizione dello sviluppo delle forme di devozione popolare. Da tale percorso storico emergono alcune linee di tendenza, nello stesso tempo sono individuati criteri di comportamento e suggestioni per una corretta valutazione delle espressioni di pietà presenti nel popolo.

The article opens with a series of clarifications on the terms used and on the characteristics of popular piety. It then deals with the development of the different forms of popular devotion. On the basis of this historical survey some trends are singled out, some criteria of behaviour are identified, and some suggestions are offered for a correct evaluation of the expressions of piety that are present among the people.
