Lo studio non intende riflettere sul significato storico del catecumenato antico e delle sue fasi relative al processo di Iniziazione Cristiana, ma ripercorre l’itinerario tracciato dalle varie motivazioni pastorali che la Chiesa post-conciliare, sia nel magistero ordinario che in quello straordinario, ha riproposto per l’evangelizzazione del nostro tempo. In particolare – nella prima parte dal titolo “I documenti” – si riflette sulle scelte orientative che hanno ispirato i documenti ecclesiali sia sul “catecumenato” che sull’“Iniziazione cristiana”, come anche sull’adattamento alla condizione infantile ed adolescenziale, nel nuovo contesto storico-culturale, richiesto dagli stessi documenti. Nella seconda parte, dal titolo “Verifica dei fatti”, si evidenziano i ritardi esecutivi nella pastorale catechistica, attraverso confronti con la prassi parrocchiale attuale della Chiesa italiana, ipotizzando i nodi non risolti e le contraddizioni vigenti tra indicazioni ed applicazioni. Il tutto in vista di quella “dimensione evangelizzatrice” che la situazione culturale richiede alla Chiesa e che la Chiesa chiama “Iniziazione cristiana dei fanciulli e dei ragazzi”.

This study does not intend taking into consideration the historical significance of the ancient institution of the catechumenate and its phases in relation to the procedure of Christian initiation but provides a general review of the itinerary pursued by the various pastoral reasons that the Church, as an ordinary and extraordinary Magisterium, after the Second Vatican Council proposed for the evangelisation of our times. Particularly in the first part, which is entitled “I documenti”, the choices of orientation which inspired the documents regarding the catechumenate and Christian initiation are taken into consideration and likewise the way in which they have been adapted to the conditions of children and adolescents in a new historical and cultural context. In the second part, which is entitled “Verifica dei fatti”, the delays on the part of the executive as regards pastoral catechetics are underlined by means of comparisons with customary practices currently adopted in the parishes of the Church in Italy. Some unsolved difficulties and present contradictions are also suggested. This is done entirely in view of the “evangelical dimension” that our cultural situation demands and that which the Church calls the “Christian Initiation of young children and adolescents”.
