La notion d’expiation, aujourd’hui largement incomprise voire dénigrée, révèle sa richesse sémantique, humaine et théologique à qui prend la peine d’en examiner attentivement les fondements bibliques et les présupposés anthropologiques. C’est ce que se propose cette enquête menée sur le triple terrain de la philosophie, de l’exégèse et de la sotériologie, mettant en valeur respectivement le caractère volontaire de l’expiation, la primauté de l’action purificatrice de Dieu et la dimension universelle et communautaire du salut offert par le Christ. Avant d’être une oeuvre de justice réparant le dommage introduit dans l’ordre établi par Dieu, l’expiation est plus radicalement une oeuvre d’amour, l’offrande d’un coeur contrit associée au sacrifice du Christ pour le salut de tous.

The notion of atonement, now widely misunderstood or even denigrated, reveals its semantic, human and theological richness to those who take the trouble to examine its biblical foundations and anthropological presuppositions carefully. This is the aim of this investigation, which is conducted in the three fields of philosophy, exegesis and soteriology, highlighting respectively the voluntary nature of the atonement, the primacy of God’s purifying action and the universal and communitarian dimension of the salvation offered by Christ. Before being a work of justice repairing the damage done to the order established by God, the atonement is more radically a work of love, the offering of a contrite heart associated with the sacrifice of Christ for the salvation of all.
